Ephedra and Ephedrine HCl

Ephedra has been used in China for more than 4000 years. Ma Huang is a Chinese herb whose natural ingredient is ephedra. Ephedra refers to the whole herb, and is natural and safe when used properly. It has been widely used throughout history as a treatment for asthma, hay fever, and allergies.

When Ephedra stimulated the systems in the human body, several different physiological changes took place. The person's heart rate increased. The person's blood vessels became constricted. The person's bronchial tubes expanded, giving them a larger circumference. When used with another stimulant, such as caffeine, Ephedra could produce a very high level of stimulation.

The physiological changes resulting from such stimulation would take place during the period when the body was acting to lower the appetite of the individual who had taken the Ephedra. The one change (the suppression of the appetite) could not occur in the absence of the other changes.

By the early 1990's a product named Ephedra had appeared on the shelves in many health food stores. It was not a drug; it was considered a supplement. It was sold as a product that could suppress the appetite. Diet conscious customers did not need more information than that. They could see that a suppressed appetite would assist with any effort to loose weight.

Ephedrine fat burners have demonstrated the ability to increase the body's ability to burn calories and stored up fat.

There is a real difference between ephedra and "herbal" ephedra. "Herbal" ephedra are extracted from a herbal Ma Huang that is used at weight loss products. Pseudoephedrine Pseudoephedrine is another alkaloid present in ephedra, but it is not as potent as ephedrine. It is hypothesized that the whole herb ephedra is safer to consume than a product containing alkaloid consituents of ephedra because the concentration of alkaloids is much higher in ephedrine based products than products containing ephedra, or ma huang.

The other type of Ephedra is ephedrine HCL synthetically produced product used as as a nasal decongestant and an expectorant for bronchial asthma.

The majority of fat burners and weight loss supplements produced with herbal ephedra that is all-natural supplement.

Ephedra is a major ingredient in various fat burning supplements. Though ephedra is effective in promoting weight loss, its side effects are too harmful to dismiss. Users of ephedra have reported reactions such as hypertension, heart damage, strokes, seizures, tachycardia, depression, heart attacks, and respiratory failure.
